Frequently Asked Questions

Q1 – Main site off Upton Court Road

Although it has taken everyone a lot longer than expected or desired we are looking forward to moving into the new school building in 2017. Building work is due to begin in early 2016 and in the meantime the temporary site at Wellington Street is fantastic and meeting our needs.

Q2 – Admission to DPA

We are a comprehensive school with an admission number of 180 students per year group. We have been opened to serve the needs of Slough and its families and the secondary Headteachers are still highly involved in our work and practice. Please see the list of governors/Trustees on our website. Our admission policy has been established to provide the community of Slough with another local school.

Q3 - Do students make as good progress at DPA?

Having completed a nationally recognised benchmark assessment when the students first joined us in September 2014 it was evident that the cohort are above the national average in terms of academic ability.

The students have made outstanding progress in all areas due to a comprehensive curriculum and the forensic level of attention that is given to our smaller cohort by our dedicated teaching staff.

50% of our cohort achieved a 5b+ in all 3 core subjects, one third of students in maths achieved a 6b+.

Q4 – How does the academy deliver learning outside of the temporary site (PE/Sport)?

At DPA we are dedicated to being creative about Teaching & learning. While in temporary accommodation we have managed to secure the use of Montem sports hall for all Physical Education lessons. This is a fantastic facility, which offers an 8 badminton court sized area which can be used for a large variety of sporting areas. Outside facilities are also used at Salthill Park which includes grass pitches/areas and a 10 tennis court facility.

Students are fully supervised travelling to and from venues during all curricular/extra-curricular sessions and the number of sporting activities completed in 2014-15 is included below:

Netball, Football, Rugby, Hockey, Basketball, Health Related Fitness, Orienteering, Table Tennis, Cricket, Rounders, Badminton, Tennis, Karate, Rowing, Athletics, Golf

Additional Activities (2015-16): Dance, Gymnastics, Fencing

Sporting fixtures: Football, Netball, Basketball, Athletics, Rugby, Rounders, Cricket

Q5 – Lunch

A team of chefs at Upton Court Grammar School prepare our outstanding cooked meal provision. The menus are diverse and provide a wide range of choice to all our students, which include vegetarian, Halal/Non-Halal and cold snack options during all meal times. Students can opt for this fantastic provision or bring in a packed lunch.

Q6 – Does being in temporary accommodation limit our curriculum?

We deliver a very broad and balanced curriculum at KS3 with the provision of a 3 year KS4. Our lessons are 50 minutes each with 4 longer days, Mon-Thurs and a shorter Friday. The period count for each subject across two weeks is:

Q7 – Highest standards, highest expectations, highest self-worth & highest quality!

At the academy we have the highest expectations of all our students and staff. Our staff deliver engaging and challenging lessons and are committed to delivering a comprehensive extra-curricular programme to support all students.

Students are expected to fully apply themselves at all times. All students are expected to complete home learning every evening and to attend support sessions when necessary. Student behaviour at the academy is outstanding. Students are expected to support each other and respect all members of the Academy at all times.

Q8 – Recruitment of staff and students

We are fully staffed with a very experienced group of teaching and support staff. We are full with 300 students and a waiting list. Our reputation in a very short period of time is very pleasing and testament to the hard work and dedication of a small but growing team of committed staff.

Q9 – SASH Education Trust

Ditton Park Academy was established as the first SASH school. We are fully supported by all the secondary Headteachers in Slough. Our Headteacher Trustees, Mrs Rockall, Herschel Grammar, Mr McAteer, Slough & Eton and Mr Bryant, The Langley Academy have been particularly supportive and influential in the successes at DPA.

Q10 – Travelling to DPA

Our primary goal is to be a local school for the families in Slough. When we are fully established off Upton Court Road our neighbouring primary schools and houses in SL3 will benefit most from our location. However, all students are welcome to apply and SBC will use our admissions criteria of distance. Students will then be encouraged to walk and cycle to their local school.

In the meantime, whilst in temporary accommodation, we ask that parents’ find alternative ways of travelling to the school other than by car. We have limited space and would like the alternative options of travelling to DPA made available to students’ such as walking, cycling, bus, train and where driving is unavoidable use the ‘drop and stride’ option to limit the traffic in and out of the temporary site.
